Bf20 seized now for sale is it worth it?

My friend is looking to buy a BF20 (2010) that the seller said it was running then just stopped, he tried to start it but was locked up. After some time as in months it’s started again is it worth about half of what a used one is going for.. he will be essentially paying £900 for a motor that is selling for about £1500 - £1900. What are your thoughts?
 
I might consider 400 tops but,.then, I don't even know the exchange rate for a £.

If the outboard was old and parts were hard to get it would actually be worth more but that one isn't.

The ONLY way I would pay that much is if I knew exactly why it locked up and thought I could fix it and not be scrapping it out.

Just my two over priced pennies.

BF20D though so I can appreciate someone trying to find a deal on one.

The impeller is dead,

What are your thoughts

To me it seems ok I said we will do some tests tomorrow, he paid £700 for it.

I said we would do

Drop test
Compression test
Drop the bottom end
Hook up a hose to the water tube and run it up to temp
Then compression test it again



What else should be checked?

Well, I can't really hear much over the exhaust and water gurgling but it seems to hitting on both holes ok so.....
Encouraging.

I suspect it got hot and was shut down by the epm system. Real engine saver that!
Maybe the guy only THOUGHT it locked up if he was pulling it over by hand.

I wouldn't try hooking a hose to it as there's no easy way to do that reliably unless you guys are ace fabricators/plumbers.


I would put a COMPLETE waterpump kit AND a new thermostat in it before running it. Already into it that much, what's another HUN or so?



You can do the compression test before doing that though and you might really e interested in checking the oil pressure. But, that too takes a BPT gauge adapter to hook it up.

Did you notice if the green lamp was on when you ran it?
 
Ok went round today took bottom end off impeller one vane was gone..

Done compression test near on 175 top and bottom.

The green light was on yes.

Went over it and yeah it seems totally fine when put it back together pumps water fine ran it good half hour at high idle no issues..

One thing not sure on is water is coming out of threaded hole to the top left of the thermostat I think it’s the pressure release as when poked could feel spring back. Is that what it is?

That thing sounds GREAT!

The part that's leaking next to the T-stat is the flush valve. One of the most troublesome things Honda added to this outboard
But, it's really just a minor neausance and easily remedied in a few ways
1. You can replace it. See items 2,.3 and 4
In the link. And, while looking at that, note items 1 and 12.

Item.1 is the.zinc for protecting the cooling system and 12 is the screw that holds it. Servicing the flush valve is a good opportunity to replace them. Don't reuse that screw because it will sieze. It might break off as you try to remove it. Try not to do that as it's difficult to get out without boomerang up the female threads.

2. Some guys choose to stop the leak by inserting a bolt in the hole. It works. Just not the way I like to do things.

My method is to remove.the water jacket, replace the zinc and screw and then inspect the flush valve. If the spring (item 2) and washer (item 4) are good, I simply clean them off and flip the washer over.
The valve piece (item 3) never goes bad.

I replace the cover and....HERE'S THE SECRET...
...I never use the flush valve again!

I prefer tank flushing as you show in your video. It's a SUPERIOR flush and, by not using the flush valve, the gasket doesn't get .misaligned again and cause the leak.

Looks like your pal got himself a BANG UP DEAL!!
 
Funny enough that’s exactly what we did stuck a screw in it and it stopped the leak 🤣🤣

I was surprised just how well it ran. I think the previous owner didn’t know what he was doing we came to the agreement that it must have stalled out and tried to pull it in gear and thought it had seized no signs of damage or anything it that I could see.
 
Sad but true... if he's that clueless.... then it's probably best for his (and his family's?) health if he just gives up boating altogether.

There was a time, when I worked at the lake, that I would often take my lunch break at the launch ramp. It is absolutely AMAZING the things you can witness there! Up to and INCLUDING cars being turned into SUBMARINES! I lost count of how many people I saw fall in the water trying to tie or untie their boats.

Then again, I didn't start out as Cap'n Graceful my own self.
But that's for another story time.
