BF200 Telltales water stream is getting blocked. Fixes??

Hi I have two 2005 BF200 outboards on a RIB and they are both having intermittent blockages of the telltales. Usually partially blocked.
Does sometimes set off the engine overheat alarm when they are run hard for a while and gets better once blockage removed.
I push a stiff bit of fishing line up the outlet and clears the problem generally.

It is a pain though and would like to get rid of it totally. Any ideas?

Many thanks.

I don't think the tell tale has anything to do with your overheating. The tell tale just shows you your impeller is pumping water.

When was last time your impeller was changed? Thermostats? I would try doing the vinegar or saltaway flush using a tub.

Thanks. Yes I will give that a try.
The telltale sets off the overheat alarm - which indicates impeller.
But clearing the telltale also stops the issue too. So a bit contradictory.
Appreciate your help

The only thing a blocked tell tale would prevent is the cooling of the VST. Which would not set off an alarm.

My old 1999 130hp will set off the alarm and shut down from a blocked telltale. I have a bit of fishing line to unblock it. Did this with a new full water pump kit and thermostat. This happens after I did a vinegar flush in a barrel, every now and then a bit of what looks like a salt crystal moves through it. I used 4 gallons of regular white vinegar plus water in the barrel.

I did drill out the plastic pisser to a larger size that helped.

My boat is only used in salt water and kept on a mooring, so not able to do flushes after each use.

Not sure how this applies to your 200.

Hiya Mick!
I don't work on these but just wanted to point out that I've seen numerous posts about the 200 hp. overheating and it appears that the 90° exhaust manifold hoses (see items 7 and 8 in the link below)
are often involved. It seems that they can plug up internally.
I would also take a peek at the return hoses.....items 6 and 9....
just as a precaution.

I don't know how that ties in with the pee stream stopping but....maybe?

Good luck mate!

Thanks everyone.
Useful feedback.
Anyone know what ratio vinegar to water is best to flush the salt? I imagine too strong isn't that good for the internals.

I used household white vinegar, 4 jugs 4 liter size, in my blue plastic 55 gallon barrel with the top cut off. Put vinegar in then filled the barrel with tap water, ran the outboard until the water warmed up to about 160/170F, took about 30-45 minutes iirc.
I removed the rubber hose from the back of the external pisser plastic, routed it to put the water back into the barrel. Removed thermostat before starting it, ran it at about 1500 rpm. Gave it a good flush with fresh water after the vinegar.
I don’t think this vinegar is strong enough to damage anything,
You can use a product like Saltaway which is stronger than vinegar and would have guidance for mixing with water.
