BF30 loud clicking noise from flywheel

Hey all, I have recently noticed a loud clicking noise coming from what seems like the flywheel area of my motor. The noise started after I heard a loud CLUNK come from the lower unit (maybe the prop) of my motor while I was putting my boat back on the trailer in the harbor. It seems to sound like something has broken off and is hitting something in the flywheel; however, the noise completely goes away with higher RPMs. The noise is only audible when the motor is at idle or just SLIGHTLY higher RPMs than idle. The motor still runs completely normally; there is no noticeable impact on gear shifting, throttle, idle, etc, just a very annoying loud clicking noise. Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

A magnet in the flywheel is probably delaminating and clipping the coils.Remove the flywheel and look for witness marks on one of the magnets.Only fix is a new flywheel

The delaminatiing magnet theory makes sense. But. If it is electric start, try removing the pull start mechanism and run it to see if the noise persists. If so, you need to remove the flywheel and investigate. If not....well.... it may have something to do with the pull starter.

Good luck.

I agree with the above, but it you do not find anything under the flywheel, you may want to run the engine on the hose. (Be sure to tape up the water intake that is above the prop) Generally, the delaminating sound increases in frequency, as well as volume when the motor increases in rpm.

Take a long screwdriver, broom handle, like stick, etc and use it as a stethoscope. Hold one end one various parts of the engine. Check from the top to the bottom and see where the sound is the loudest.

Since you hit something, it is very possible that you chipped a tooth on the pinion gear in the lower unit and the sound is resonating up the drive shift. Sometimes, it sounds like it is coming from the engine, when it is actually the lower unit.
