Hi Honda buds

Older Honda 50 ....no instruments Its been running slower recently (sounds good at speed) idle quite rough tho.....installed brand new plugs..... I pulled all three plug leads individually and cylinder #2 made no change to running engine. Tried to test for spark by grounding against engine ...I didn't see any spark on all three plugs ( quite likely I did it wrong tho..)

I suspect #2 not firing spark... not getting power ( I installed a duplicate #2 coil I have from a spare parts engine I have .... same result )

Could you guys give me your thoughts .....Im a shade tree mechanic (skill level)

Thx Simon

Hi Simon,

I suspect that you weren't getting a good ground connection if you were just holding the plug against the engine. Use a jumper wire or a spark tester and connect to a better ground point that you've cleaned and checked with an ohmmeter or a test light.

Also, some systems don't create easily seen spark at the plug tip so checking in the dark or under a blanket might help with that.

Good luck.

Compression test first check reading ,2 put some oil into the suspect cylinder if reading is higher suspect piston rings if not suspect valves, all compresion test should be similar.

This points directly at a set of carbs needs some careful attention in my experience. It's not firing because it isn't getting any gas.....heavily reinforced by this comment "idle quite rough tho....."
