Cleaning crankshaft splines without removing powerhead

Found a 1969 9.5 Evinrude for $160.00, usd. Looks hardly used. Quick points clean, new water pump, L/U seals, spark plugs and T-stat. Fired up great! Have the "Marine Seafoam" in the gas now, hoping to do some de-carbing. Hope it don't monkey up the carb.

Anyways, onto the rusty crank. I am the first person to remove the L/U as there was factory paint still intact. Shaft was stuck. Slid a copper pipe over the shaft to protect it. Clamped 2 vice grips on the pipe tight, then tapped the vice grips, and shaft came out. How to clean the rust up in there. Pushed paper towel soaked in vineger to desolve the rust. Worked great, next time will be a cloth towel hooked to a wire, paper was a mess to remove. Then taped a Scotch Bright pad to a long screw driver to make sure it was clean. Baking soda rag to stop the vineger. Put it back together nice and smooth.
Figured I would share what worked for me. Going to try it on water yomarrow and next weekend. Then giving it to my dad, he wants a small lake setup.
