Looking for someplace or someone who is knowledgeable/competent about working on 2 stroke outboards built in the late 80's. I can't find a marina or boat dealer in the central ohio area who will work on anything older than a 2000. Have a 1989 Evinrude 150 XP that needs fine tuning. I simply cannot find anyone. Any leads would be greatly appreciated

The #1 step on that motor is a compression test.----Easy to do with $40 tool.----Report your numbers.-----Test for strong spark on all 6 leads.------Carburetors have fixed jets and ignition is electronic with no adjustments needed.----So " tuning " is a thing of the past.-----Save a lot of coins by taking the time to investigate this motor.

Agreed. The folks around here can help walk you through the basic troubleshooting and diagnosis. Below are the tools you'll need to take all the measurements needed to test the health of your engine. Sum total for all 3 is about $40. They aren't the best but will be sufficient to test things.

So what exactly is the engine doing or not doing that makes you think it needs fine tuning? Also, it's a complete shame that nobody will work on anything older than 2000. Engines from the 80's and 90's are pretty straight forward so should be a pretty simple thing to service for an experienced mechanic.

Most folks with older ( budget ) motors will complain at a $500 repair invoice.------Will go shouting all around town about the high cost of work at that shop.-----They likely have enough customers with $60,000 boats who say " thankyou very much " when they see a $500 invoice on their baby.-------I feel sorry for folks with older motors.-----You can not blame the shop as some bad experiences have made them take that stand !!
