Damaged CCMS reeds

I have a 1996 mariner (mercury) 40hp and have had CCMS reed valves on it for just over a year, recently it started starting and idling poorly so I blamed the carburetor, but found destroyed valves, the worst pedal hanging open nearly broken off.

I adjusted my idle mixture correctly and kept it just on the rich side to avoid any lean pops and have never experienced any lean pops. It was a bit cranky starting this morning, but i didn't think too much of it, after about 30 miles of driving it was really grumpy about starting and was missing really bad on one cylinder.

I really, REALLLYYY liked the performance of these things, it's a whole different engine; i just want to know what did i do wrong so it doesn't happen again next time.

Call Chris as he will most likely take care of this
I reached out to tech support email, I'm sure I caused this, I'm not looking to get anything for free, I just want to know how to move forward.
Also I noticed that now have a stuffer kit and more reed options for this engine, so I'm sure he can tell me exactly what will work the best.

Just wasn't sure if anyone here had any experience that could help me
