I have a 1996 mariner (mercury) 40hp and have had CCMS reed valves on it for just over a year, recently it started starting and idling poorly so I blamed the carburetor, but found destroyed valves, the worst pedal hanging open nearly broken off.
I adjusted my idle mixture correctly and kept it just on the rich side to avoid any lean pops and have never experienced any lean pops. It was a bit cranky starting this morning, but i didn't think too much of it, after about 30 miles of driving it was really grumpy about starting and was missing really bad on one cylinder.
I really, REALLLYYY liked the performance of these things, it's a whole different engine; i just want to know what did i do wrong so it doesn't happen again next time.
