The lower unit on my johnson

The lower unit on my johnson 85 hp 78 yr has a dent in the front bottom of the lower unit. The dent starts about 1/4 way up on the rounded portion of the front and extends toward and around to bottom approx 1 inch and is approx 1/16 deep.My question will this cause gear problems? When changing lubricant I found a few small metal particles. Thanks Front

"Frontneck.... That area of the lower unit is where the shift rod connects to a housing that contains the shift lever and bearing assy. There is quite a bit of space between the inner portion of the lower unit and that shift housing though.

If you have been able to shift your engine as usual and have encountered no unusual resistance in shifting, I wouldn't be concerned about it. However, it would be a good idea to fill in that dent with a suitable substance from your favorite automotive parts store.

The magnet on the drain plug.... to have a bunch of fuzzy like metal attached to that magnet is normal and no cause for alarm. However, if the metal you speak of is more like metal slivers, chunks of metal, or what might resemble splinters, pieces that have obviously broken off of something, then it would be a good idea to tear the lower unit down for inspection.

Thanks Joe for the advice on bentL/U.The motor runs good shifts good but I do have a miss at idle and low rpms.Local tech.says there is no low speed adjustment and it would be a month before he could build carbs if thats the problem(haven't done compression test)Also that I would need special tool to remove jets if I built carbs myself. What does this special tool look like?and can a novice build carbs?I know I would need service manual and tech.says he can order kits for me.78 johnson 85 hp.thanks again Front
