DT4 tell tale inconsistent

My DT4 starts easily and runs, when it’s idling in neutral it pumps water lovely with a strong tell tale, but once I put it in gear and rev up, the tell tale weakens and eventually stops. Put it in neutral and it resumes with the water being very hot, so clearly it’s not cooling when the tell tale stops. What might be causing this problem? I did have it all apart a while back go replace the impellor but it all seemed to go back together fine

With the engine running at idle try shoving some weed wacker line up into the telltale discharge. Maybe some debris clogging the discharge? If that doesn’t help…

I’d suggest you replace the entire water pump with an OEM kit. You don’t give a year but a water pump kit for an 1989 engine is $20 at boats.net. While you have the lower unit off check that the water tube is firmly set in the water tube grommet.

If your issue isn’t the water pump it’s only going to cost you $20 to rule out the water pump. Salt water engine? If so, Google vinegar flush.

Running / testing this in a bucket??----If so the water must be 6" above the impeller.----Better yet, test it on the boat at the lake.
