"Hey, i got a good question about my 1982 Johnson 60. The problem started occuring when i was towing one of my buddies on the tube and i cornered tightly, the engine revs up and acts as if its popped out of gear, or acts like a car would if the clutch were slipping. once you put it back in neutral it goes back into gear no problem. Then the other day I was out in the ocean with my buddy and it started happening at low RPM, but went away again, what part could i replace to solve this? im new to boats but have alot of mechanical experience with cars"

"it is prob a bad prop hub,..meaning u need to get it re-hubbed,or a new prop...or,if it is bumping in and out, lower unit needs to be disassembled for inspection,or maybe adj of shift cable sometimes cures it.. i bet,on the prop.. jwb"

"If it is bumping in and out of gear then a) the shift linkage needs adjusting or b) more likely, the clutch dog is worn - fix it before it wears your gears. This is most likely due to easing it into gear rather than shifting quickly."

I have a similar problem. Last

I have a similar problem. Last fall I purchased a 1973 20 hp Johnson. It ran fine till this summer when it started to jump out of gear. In order to keep it running I have to keep the shifter pulled forward. The previous owner said he had the lower unit replaced. I had a mechanic inspect it and he said the gears were worn. Would it be feasible to repair it or not. Thanks for the help.

"Duane, I'd have to say that the previous owner is not telling the truth or was scammed. I'm almost certain the clutch dog and gearface have excessive wear.

Yes, it is feasible to do it yourself. The parts are available."

"Might just be simple cavitation, if it seems to jump back into gear. Just slow the engine down real slow and see if it improves."
