Evinrude 50hp stalls out when throttled in gear

We have a 1993 Evinr

"Hi All:
We have a 1993 Evinrude VRO 50hp outboard motor, model number VE5OTLETB.

problem:
motor starts fine, idles ok, can throttle it up very good, but, when put into gear to go forward (engage propeller), the motor stalls out and stops?
Any suggestions on what the problem could be and how to correct would be appreciated.
