"My Evinrude 200hp (2000) has a problem with the tilt and trim. Raising the motor works fine, but when lowering it jerks and hesitates, but eventually lowers. Would this be the motor or the hydraulic pump? If I put motor in reverse it seems to help with lowering the motor as the boat is moving backwards.Any suggestions?"

"If enough fluid in the reservoir and no air, the problem may be the upper bolt of the tiltcylinder: Seized, or close to."

"Having retired before that engine was manufactured, I'm not familiar with what the design of the unit might be, however......

The older model PTT units which sat between the transom brackets, having two trim rams and one center tilt cylinder would encounter that exact problem occasionally.

The cause of the problem always proved to be that the inside of the center tilt cylinder would be slightly scored and the tilt rod piston would chafe and hang momentarily but only in the down mode. The cure was, unfortunately, to replace the cylinder and piston rod assembly."

"Unfortunately on this system

"Unfortunately on this system 'Fast Track' the tilt cylinder is an integrated part of the housing, and replacing it it would mean replacing the unit. But Joe is right, as usual, You may have scored the cylinder, but the reason is normally that the bolt/bushing has seized. This causes a sideload on the piston rod, it bends and makes the steel piston get in direct contact with the walls of the sylinder.
Check the bolt first, take it out and change the bushings. If that does not help, You may try to take out the piston and hone the cylinder if not too much dammaged. Then reinstal with new gaskets/seals. It may be quite a job, but do it asap and You may save the unit."
