Hello,
I have a 2014 Yamaha f115LA and have a strange noise. The only thing I can compare it to is the sound a crystal glass makes when you wet your finger and rub it around the rim of the glass, it makes a ringing sound. The sound I have is the same type of sound but a deeper tone. It only does it while moving under load in the water (won't do it with flush ears). It starts at around 1100 rpm and goes away above 1200 rpm. I have a friend who has a Yam 115 that had the exact same sound and after he had a 100 hour service it was gone.
So, I serviced my outboard and did not have the same results, the sound is still there. I am assuming it had something to do with the water pump since oil, spark plugs etc. should have made no difference. I replaced the impeller and impeller cup, inspected and greased the bushing and drive shaft above the impeller housing and greased the splines and surface below the splines as well.
I am pretty mechanically inclined but still watched a few how to videos to see the process. They all said put a bunch of grease into the plastic housing before the steel impeller cup is installed. I completed the service and took it out and the sound was still there.
That pissed me off, so I went online and purchased a factory service manual to see if I missed anything. The difference I found was the factory manual showed to use a small amount of adhesive between the plastic housing and the steel impeller cup (not grease). I thought that was it for sure, I took it apart, cleaned it all up and put a small amount of adhesive in three spots around the housing then inserted the impeller cup, I also put a little at the last third of the cup before I seated it into the housing to make sure it couldn't vibrate. Of course I greased the bushing and shaft points again. Still makes the noise! I don't know what else it could be, in my head the ringing sound sure matches what the impeller cup would sound like if the impeller was causing it to vibrate at a certain rpm range. I wonder what they did during my friends service that killed the annoying sound. Do any of you guys have an idea what I need to do or look at to get rid of the sound. I tried to attached a couple of videos so you can hear it.
Well, looks like I'm screwed, says both videos are too big even after I shortened them. Any ideas anyway?
Sorry for the novel,
Thanks
