Faria Tachometer Pole Setting for 75hp 4 cylinder

Hi All,
Just trying to setup a tacho on outboard. Its a Faria Chesapeake 0-6000prm model. I am trying to select the correct pole setting. I thought I had it right but out on the water at WOT it was of the scale, somewhere around 7500rpm. I have read the instructions and it mentions a Tach adaptor Mercury/Mariner 1977 to Present *Use Tach adapter #17461A9, and some pre 2001 Mercury 90HP outboards may require wiring a .1mf, 100 volt non-polarized capacitor between the signal and ground stud terminals.

I am Just wondering if anyone else has come across this situation or knows what the correct setting is. Or how many poles does the 4 cylinder mercury have. I thought I had the correct setting but obviously not.

Thanks
Jason

I don't know how many poles your battery charging portion of your stator has. But I do know that if your engine idles fine without dying when shifting into gear, or there is no clunk to speak of when shifting into a gear, your RPMs are probably around my Merc's 675 +/- 50 RPM. Moving up to WOT, if you get on plane in a reasonable amount of time and your boat seems to sing at WOT and you have decent boat speed you may be in range of 5k RPM for WOT. I have a new tach, same range and mfgr. as yours and its been several years but my Merc 115 4 cyl runs on position 4 as I recall.

Another thought is go to "Go-Fast.com prop slip calculator" and insert your specifics leaving the RPM column blank. Assuming your rig is performing as mentioned above, plug in 10% for slip and back into the RPM window. If it comes up around 5k you should be pretty close.

While you are testing that maybe someone responds to this, has a manual on that engine, and can give you the parameters that Faria needs to tell you which number to select.

Thanks Mark,

I have sent an email to Faria and waiting for their reply as well. Im keen to get it back in the water with a new (old) stainless prop I had sitting around to see what happens.

So just had a reply from Faria. They said it needs to be set to the 12 pole setting, which is Number 5 on the back of the tachometer.

Thanks all.
