Fastwin 18hp gearcase needle bearing retrofit.

Hi all,.
The 18s are great motors but noticed that the configuration of the area under the water pump seal went from a bush permanently attached to the case (only available with a new case) to a replaceable needle bearing in 1969 (-72 evinrude). My 1957 has quite a bit of slop in this area and it is affecting it's sealing. Was wondering if Screenshot_20190528-101513.jpg I could extract the bush and replace with the newer bearing style? Attached is a photo. #50 on this 1969. Thanks

Have to say I've never tried it, but I have doubts. That bushing was cast in place and who knows what the O.D. was like. Could have all sorts of ruffles and ridges to hold it in place (??) I suspect it would be possible with some machine work to bore the hole to size.

Fdr, thanks for the reply. I feared that and was kind of thinking the same thing. If anyone else has tried it, don't be shy.
I replaced the seal again, and we'll see how long she holds.

I believe that shafts running on a needle bearing need to be a little harder material.-----So you may need to find a shaft as well.---Just a point to consider.
