Honda 225AK3 Tilt-Trim Bonding Strap

Bonding strap to my zinc on the tilt-trim is a little frayed - probably down to 50% of the wire still intact. Two questions:

1. Would these weird salt deposit / splatters on motor mount be caused by poor bonding?

2. The mount-screw (not the zinc-side) is really stripped and I don't think I can get it out easily. There appear to be a few other unused holes on the base, anyone know if these are threaded and can be used to attach a new strap?

I've done some reading about "white spots on aluminum" and, for the most part, it seems it is a form of corrosion caused by exposure to the elements OR stray electrical current caused by poor bonding or depleted anodes.

So, yes, I think your bad bonding wire may be at least partially to blame.

Also, those spots look similar to what I see sometimes when pulling off a water jacket cover and looking inside a fairly pristine outboard that has internal zinc that still looks great. I see it a lot too up inside extension cases when the gearcase is taken off.

You can remove with 1.part warm water, one part vinegar then rinse.

If there's pitting underneath you might consider light sanding and painting (clear coat) or using a sealer to slow that from getting worse.

Good luck.

Thanks all. Spotting cleaned up with vinegar - with no pitting underneath it. Put in a new temporary strap to get me through a few months until OEM part arrives and it's next out of the water. Will keep an eye on if it comes back.

Yeah, those straps get ignored as "unimportant" but nothing could be further from the truth.

Goodonya for catching it and taking action.
