Honda BF115

G'day,

Writing from Exmouth Australia. Got a Honda BF115 (BEBO 1007992 engine / BZBO 1301580 leg). Was running great and then slowed down to put lures in. It conked out and couldn't get it started again.

Went to mechanic, checked fuel pump and vapourisor. Went around the Map sensor and got it running so diagnosed as faulty MAP sensor.

Got new Map sensor. Ran for about 10mins and then sputtered and died again.

Reading some forums.

- Check loose wires
- Faulty coil (stops working when gets warm)
- Fault due to heat sensor engaging

Mechanic doesn't have a computer so just trying to get to the answer quicker.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Hi Tyler,

Not much info to go on here but intuition is saying it's starving for fuel for some reason.

You don't say but were any fuel filters replaced when the VST was "checked"? If not then consider doing that as a process of elimination

Was the VST drained? If so was a sample taken of what came out?

Was the VST opened and inlet valve and float inspected?

Have you checked your fuel tank vent system or tried running with the fill cap loose/removed? Use caution not to spill gas if you try doing that though.

Have you looked inside the fuel tank for signs of dirt/debris?

You may want to take out a fuel sample with a turkey baster.

Pull the sample as near the bottom of the pickup tube as is possible. Put the sample in a clear container and allow to sit 20 to 30 minutes and inspect for separation.

If no separation is noted, test the volatility compared to a sample of fresh fuel from a different source.

If possible, try running with a different fuel tank and hose/primer bulb setup to rule out a supply side issue with the one you're now using.

Has the fuel/water separator been drained/serviced?

Hopefully you are careful about the fuel you use.

I for one don't buy fuel from camp grounds or marinas.

Stale, contaminated fuel is a killer for these engines' fuel systems.

Just some thoughts.

Hope you get it sorted.

Good luck.

I recently bought this boat and got it through a full inspection and service. Drove it for a solid 2 months no issues, so I don't think old fuel would be an issue.

Since taking it to the local boat mechanic. We are remote and don't have many and the ones we do have are limited with their diagnose technology. None of them having Honda computer.

So this mechanic has:

Tested Fuel pump... all good
Taken apart and cleaned the VST
Cleaned injectors, fuel rod

Replaced Map sensor

Cleaned IAC valve

So it runs alright for like 10 mins and then conks out, wont really start after that well

Mechanic is looking to get it read by an automechanic in town who apparently has a reader for all engines.

I agree it sounds fuel related for sure. Maybe even temperature related but another mechanic said it wouldn't stall out on temp just go into limp mode.

I'll try the breather option but both breathers seem to be fine. Will have a gander in fuel tank as well.

Any other ideas let me know!!

Cheers for you help!

Read similar issue from owner but we didn't get whole story ended up being wrong spark plugs not NGK installed.
However If It runs for 10 minutes each time then conks out. Need to get hold of a fuel pressure gauge and see if you can repeat the malfunction and what the gauge is saying when its failing. It seems to be running for too long to be a blockage or stuck VST float.
If it runs for 10 minutes dies, then you give it time to cool off and can restart? and run again my guess is the fuel pump is overheating and failing.

Thanks mate!! I've passed that onto the mechanic. To be honest, the fuel pump has always been in my gut to what is going on. We are just remote and the mechanics aren't overly equiped. Also they tend to only deal or be equipped to work with the brands they are affiliated with. Its Yamaha and Mercury country up here.

Got a scan booked in tomorrow but I'm not feeling overly confident that is going to get a result. If not, I'll try the other boat mechanic in town and see where we get. If not a 1400km drive south to Perth it will be to go to a Honda Marine shop.

Nonetheless I appreciate everyones ideas and advice, really helps, so thank you all.

Cheers

Unfortunately, a Dr H scan will not give fuel pressures or throw a pressure code, so if it does find something it will be a sensor or voltage off spec with something the ECU controls.

Hi mate, Honda diagnostics don't work on your motor, its too old. If you look in the electrical box that has the ecm, you will see a red plug with a weather cap. If it's two pin, bridge the two wires using a small spit pin, if 4 pin, bridge the lime green and black wires. Turn the key on and if you have a sendor fault it will flash a code. long flashes are mutiples of ten, short flash is single digits, for example, 2 long and three short is 23. Have a gon and let me know what you conme up with and I will look up the fault for you. Also check fuel presuure when engien won't run.
