Honda BF130 Pulser Coil Replacement DIY?

New member
First time boat owner, first time poster.

Had our '04 Aqua Patio w/ a Honda 130 (265hrs) out for the first time this weekend and ended up getting the check engine light and god-awful alarm, we used the paper-clip trick and pulled the codes and it was Error Code 8. The alarm would only come on after we turned the boat on after it was off for a period of time (6hrs on Saturday and 45mins on Sunday) each time the alarm started as soon as I turned the key. Motor started up and ran fine (had to get it on the trailer) except for the beeping.

However it highlighted the fact that I may or may or may not need to remove the timing chain to replace the Pulser Coil, can anyone confirm/deny that I need to remove it? Also if anyone has a DIY or instructions on how to make the repair that would be greatly appreciated as I have not been able to find one online yet.

@chawk_man yep did that as well, I went through every connector I could access and checked them for corrosion and re-seated them and also checked all fuses with no luck.
 
I really am not qualified to comment on the 130, but in the previous post Mike stated: "Before you go through the trouble to order a new part, check the connections at the large connector above the ECM. The specific leads to check are gray/white and brown/red. Pulser #2 in on the starboard side of the crankshaft. The resistance between these two leads should be between 970 and 1170 ohms. "

Did you do that test? If so, then I guess you will need a set of new pulsers. I can't help you the replacement procedures. Mike is the expert.
 
I was unable to do that b/c I didn't have a tester where the boat is. Since I'm only on location with the boat on the weekends I'm preparing for the worst in that I will have to replace the part, hence the reason I bought a new coil and am looking for the repair instructions etc.

I found the shop manual online so I will look through it regarding the steps you outlined.

Will the removal of the crankshaft pulley require a special tool? I was reading that it needs to be torqued back down to 180ftlbs. I've done timing belts on several of my cars but never an outboard.
 
Yes, there is a holding tool.
