Honda BF150 Thermostat Housing Corrosion

Hey Guys,
I have twin Honda BF150s model year 2005 with about 530 hours on both and I’m having a couple of issues with my port engine--- I’d really appreciate any thoughts and suggestions. After a long haul trip I noticed that the port engine had a loud whine (issue #1) when I started up the engine for the next run but there were no anomalies with idling or running at speed (no surging, idling is stable, startup is normal, no warning lights). After pulling the engine cover, I noticed that a little bit of salt creep was oozing out of the thermostat housing very near the silencer duct (issue #2).

Thanks to all the information on this forum (thanks guys, it really helps just to read through older posts to help with troubleshooting), I decided to check the IAC valve to see if it was stuck open and the air duct screen for clogs (a check of the alternator belt seems to be okay to me) with no success in locating the whining issue. I have the Honda BF150 shop manual and I can’t seem to find any references to an engine that appears to be running normally but just with a whining noise.

Setting aside the first issue for my Honda mechanic to look at, I dug up some new thermostats and thermostat-housing gasket to address the issue of salt creep on the thermostat housing. When I pulled the thermostats, they looked like they were in working condition with minimal corrosion. The BIG problem is that I noticed some salt deposit around the metal housing and when I proceeded to clean up the salt with a light pad, small chunks of the metal housing were chipping away due to the corrosion leaving a noticeable groove where the plastic housing mates with the metal housing. Of course, when I replaced everything and fired up the engine, water was leaking out of the housing where the groove is. It was at this point I decided to go home to lick my wounds and turn to the pros. What can I do now?

Thanks so much for any input and suggestions you can give me.
