Honda BF30A crossed polarity

Battery cables (polarity) got mistakenly reversed. We realized that because starter motor was spinning backwards! We corrected the cables and starter motor works fine but there's no spark. We assume the rectifier is fried & have ordered a new one. But is it likely that CDI is fried as well?

Well, I don't know that outboard but I believe that you're going to find that the charging system has nothing to do with the ignition. So, I'm guessing that you are probably correct that the polarity reversal may have damaged the CDI as well as charging system components.

But before throwing parts at it you should go through the troubleshooting steps in the shop manual for no spark because the current may have damaged the exciter coil or even the pulsar coil and not the CDI.

The rectifier is fuse protected I believe. Have you checked that?
If the fuse blew in time, you might have caught a break there.

If you get it running you can then see if it will charge.

Good luck.

Thnx so much for your helpful responses. Much appreciated. Fuse good (starter motor works). Can order rectifier & coils (cheap!) so will try that but if needs cdi then toast since can’t locate bf30a Honda cdi anywhere
Thnx again!

Yes CDI is big bucks so hope that is ok. You can check the ohms on the exciter and pulser coils as well as the CDI. Also a further check with a DAV & multi-meter to verify coils and CDI are creating proper peak voltage. There are CDI's out there for 25 and 30 HD Hondas. Just take your time and verify what is wrong first, do not just throw money at it. Go slow and verify.
