Honda BF60A burnt lower unit shrouding

Hi, I bought a new pontoon this spring with a Honda BF60A engine. For the most part it’s been running well but we noticed this badly burnt section on left side just above the lower unit.

Can anyone explain what may have caused it? Could it be an exhaust leak?

I don't know. I've nevee worked on a BF60A.
But, you may be right about an exhaust leak.

On the older twins I've had apart, the exhaust is very similar. I've seen the pipes get holes in them from the heat and salt water. I've seen the gaskets fail on many. The mount bolts also come loose and.break or fall out.

The pipe drops down through the center of the oil case and releases the gasses and water into the extension case.


If you see a correlatiin to the mark you have on your outboard and the pipe's location in the depictiin, then yes, it could have been caused by an exhaust leak.

It's a bit of a job to go in and inspect or repair as it will probably require removing the powerhead to get access. At least that's how the twins are.

I doubt exhaust leak, exhaust flows through the mount case which is a substantial casting then through a channel in the oil pan and down the middle of the mid section. Perhaps post a photo, I have never seen an exhaust leak on any model of honda apart from the 2hp air cooled.
