I have changed the side mount to a top mount on my boat and needed a longer control cable. The newer one has an extra plug (6 pin) at the engine.
The engine and the old cable bever had or used this new plug. Anyone know what it is for? The end of the cable at the controls also has an used plug???
Than you in advance.

Hi,

I don't have your answer but just guessing (and maybe telling you something you already know) that the new control harness is universal to many outboards with additional features that have been added since yours was made 20 years ago.

Look under the hood, dash or kick panels of any car these days and you will often find plug connectors just hanging there not being used.

They're typically for features that the car doesn't have but might be on the the next "trim level" up of the same model.

It's cheaper and easier for the OEM to use the same wiring for all like models and can allow the dealer to upsell a feature to a base model buyer and then just plug it in.

You can take advantage of those extra connectors in the harness to provide power and connectivity to the console for things like added cockpit lighting or custom.gauges.

Making a diagram and putting it in the vessel's log for future reference is a smart idea if you do something like that.

Good luck.
