Have you checked your thermostat? It may be stuck open. If it is stuck open, the motor will never come to temperature. To idle correctly, the motor needs to get to temperature...but I guess you probably know that already. Get it to temperature and your idle problem may be solved too.
I am not sure a 90's thermostat would fit.
I would not install a different thermostat unless you are running in really cold water.
If you are doing mostly idling with this motor, you may want to use NGK DR5HS spark plugs. They are one step hotter and will stay cleaner than the DR6HS plugs that the motor is supposed to have.
