Late 70's Merc 200 Removing Powerhead to Replace Tiller handle

Hello All

I have a late 70's Merc 200 20HP that a tree fell on and broke the tiller handle off at the base. We have tore it down to the part where I assume we must have to pull the powerhead off to get to it...but we can't figure out how to get it off! We have another motor to swap one from, but both are sitting at the same point with the powerhead still sitting on them.

Can anyone tell me how painstaking of a project this may be, and if so, is there any usual point that a greenhorn would get stuck with trying to pull this off? Sorry for the shoddy explanation...I LIKE messing with outboards, and can change a water pump...so I am dangerous...

I am not sure how much you need disassemble the engine, but i can show couple of photos from the day when i made rebuild to my 20hp, 1977. I am sure that you need disassemble your motor little bit more than i did. It was not funny work. Take a lot of photos about your powerhead before you begin, and during the work. You need good photos to help you when you are putting all back again. I have 125 photos about my project, and it was not enough. Also it is good to put parts own boxes and make good notes to each box. Also i like to write down each step to paper, then when you are going to put all back again, you just need to follow your paper from end to start. Then you are doing all steps same order. Also it is good to remember that hurry is no good when working with engines, and keep your hands clean. Other engines in the picture number 1, are not mine. I did my work in education center and there was other engines too. All gaskets should be renew, of course. I have taken off my tiller handle from the hinge, since i use remote controls. Hopefully you find my photos helpful.
