Long to short shaft?

Hey guys, I hope all is well with everyone.
So I have acquired a 1976 40HP Johnson 2 Stroke outboard.
It is a long shaft and I am wondering if I could take out the 5 inch housing and shaft and put in a short shaft and other parts to make it a standard shorter outboard.
The part I would use are from a 1969 33hp Johnson.

They made some changes to the driveshafts around 74 or so.----I doubt the 33 HP shaft will fit.----Do the research.----Your location?----E-bay is a source of parts.----Compare impeller part # between the 2 models.

I'm in Wyoming.
I will research it, just wanted to see your thought's on this

Water pump impeller for the 76 is listed as NLA.----Impeller for 33 is available all day long.

I could just take the one from the 69 and compare it to the 76 and see how it fits on the shaft as well

Ok.. That's what I was wondering and why I was going to check the water impeller to verify.
I didn't find anything on Ebay for standard shafts

Production numbers on a 76 short shaft were not anywhere near those of a 1966 model !----Parts availability is an issue.-----I have some parts available , but too far away for shipping / border is in the way.-----You are better off to hunt for a 40 HP from 1965 to 1970.
