Loss of power and check engine light

OK need some help. Have a 2017 Honda 250 we had a loss of power and heard popping - assumed spark plugs also had an issue with the fuel cap (wasn't venting and sucked in the fuel tank) new cap and new plugs. Took boat out loss power and got a check engine light. Ordered a service connector to get code. Pulled code 1. Is the HO2 sensor really our problem? Engine has around 360 hours on it - bought it used. Having a difficult time finding a mechanic to even look at it where we live. Thanks for any help and advice!

I don't know much of anything useful about these outboards. I've never worked on one.

But, if it was running ok before the fuel tank got collapsed, then I wonder if either there was some trash in the tank that was pulled into the pickup, got stuck and is now blocking the system OR, could the low pressure pump have suffered some damage when that high vacuum took place?

I remember seeing that some of.the 250hp Hondas use a very expensive, electric, low pressure pump. You didn't say whether you have an A model or a D model .

Hopefully those pumps aren't delicate little jewels. You may want to look into which you have and what will be involved in testing both low and high pressure fuel pressure.

As far as the.oxygen sensor goes, I know that the 225hp engines have had many issues with those so it's a possibility. But to check it out you will likely need to use the Dr. H diagnostic tool for accurate information You may be forced to get some help to sort this one.out.

You can order the official paper shop manual for either model at the link below. That would give you the specifications and instructions for fuel system testing as well as tins of other useful information.
I have always found the Official Honda manuals well worth the money in helping you understand your outboard.

The A model is listed under the 115hp to 250hp header while the D is listed under the 115hp to 350hp header

Yes, please let us know if you are running a model A or D.

A failing HO2 sensor will not cause the problem you described. When it fails, the engine simply runs too rich. If you pull plugs and the electrodes are black, you are running too rich. The electrodes should be milk chocolate light brown if running correctly.

Agree with JGMO - pull your pickup tube in fuel tank and check for clogging. Also, if you have an external fuel/water separator, drain it or replace the filter element if that hasn't been done for a while.

Clear codes as described in attached document. Then run engine again until you get an alarm and MIL light comes on, then pull codes and let us know what you find.

Thank you, we cleared the codes and put int back in the water. No power but have not checked the fuel lines. We only get the alarm when in the water. With the muffs on it will run as should or close to, did notice that the RPM's jumped up a couple of times. We did pull and drain the fuel/water separator. Found a little bit of sediment in it, and cleaned it.
