Manual tilt lock - Evinrude 50

Hi.

In case I can't fix my power tilt I might have to run without one. I can't see any way to lock my engine in place without power tilt. On my previous smaller engine it had a tongue that would catch on a rod you put through the transom mount. There's not one on my Evinrude 50.

There is a open hole on the upper part of the transom mount (pictured). Should there be some manual lever here? I can't see how it would function.

As a last resort I guess the boat would run sub optimal but ok without the motor locked at all? Going easy in reverse or tie it down somehow with a weak link in case it hits something.

That engine had a the lever pictured,a cable and a hydraulic cylinder. If you moved tye lever one way it would lock, move it the other way you could manually move the engine up and down.I not sure but I think those parts or nla.

Thank you! That is probably right. I saw another Evinrude with tilt assist, which probably has that lever (he didn't have a picture of the lever). Any tips on how to lock the motor without a power tilt or the lever? Just let it hang loose and be careful when running reverse?

No way to lock it down, not very safe to run it loose, the engine will kick up in reverse.Might try a salvage yard for the parts to convert it to manual release.Whats wrong with your power tilt and trim.

Thanks for the quick replies, appreciated.

The rod seal is leaking. My plan was to release the rod cap then use the motor as leverage to pull the rod out of the housing to replace the seal. The rod moved in and out so I think it works otherwise (of course limited movement as the oil sprays out)
Another problem is that the previous owner completely demolished the drain plug. I think the only solution for this is welding aluminium into it, grinding down and redrill/tap?

Next issue is that despite several days of penetrating spray, heat and freeze: The rod bolt is completely stuck in the motor and the mount rod for the power tilt is completely stuck in the transom mount.

The fill plug is OK and can be removed with ease, but the manual bypass valve is stuck and stripped. It's not bypassing now.

There is a used tilt assist for sale that sits on a Evinrude 40 HP VRO, It looks like it should fit. GIVEN, that I even manage to get the power tilt out.

A friend had a suitable drill, drill tap and plug I could borrow, so fingers crossed I will successfully make new threads and install a new plug.

I did a compression test on the motor, and it was spot on 130 psi on both cylinders, so that's a win at least.

Took some work and a steady hand, but just might do the trick. Need a bit shorter plug and probably a Dowty washer or similar.

(Btw, no I didn't expect the two o-rings to work 😄)
