Mariner 125 stalls after 3mins idling

Hi all,

I have a 2002 Mariner 125 outboard which has keeps stalling approx 3 mins after starting up. The only solution is to keep pumping the primer bulb (which goes nice and soft pre stalling). It sounds like its stalling due to poor fuel supply. The same thing happens under load (if i ever get it that far!)

So far I have tried:

1. Changing primer bulb/ fuel tanks
2. Checked the lines for air leaks
3. Changed the fuel pump diaphragm
4. Changed the "plungers" in the carbs (I'm afraid I don't know what they are, but a mechanic helped me out with that one)

Any further suggestions as to what the cause could be?

Many thanks,

Ollie

The compression in the crankcase may be an issue.-------It is what drives the fuel pump diaphragm.--------A compression test does not show what crankcase compression is ....It may help in determening if there are problems internally.

many thanks for your response. I had a compression test done recently and they said it was fine, although I don't really trust them so may try testing it myself. Any other ideas..?

Right, and this will NOT show up in a compression test, for it's blow by that is polluting the fresh air charge and causing low speed and idling problems. Just went through this on an early triple that had excellent compression but would not run below 1,500 rpms.

Many thanks for the idea - It seems to stall even under high revs - does this make it less likely to be the crankcase compression? The only way of keeping it going is to keep pumping the primer.
