Merc engine "knocking"

I ran my two stoke oil low and my 1994 merc 125 ob started knocking in the power head, my friend in Fla. told me to use high quality two stroke oil, and add some directly to the gas tank to make it run "rich". my question is...is this a good idea?, or does anyone know of a better method to elevate the knocking?

I would say that you need to remove the exhaust cover on the port side of the motor.------This allows you to see the pistons / rings.---It allows you to see if the motion of the pistons is correct.----Extra oil will not fix this.-----Why no low oil alarm ???

Running "low" on oil would not result in engine damage, running "out" of oil would. A number of things could cause a knock in the power head, a bad lower rod bearing being one. Continuing to operate the motor without determining the cause could result in an increase in cost of repair.

Inspection of the power head components is the key here...you may be lucky and only find a heavy carbon buildup on the pistons which will cause knock.
