Mercruiser 4.3 Model designations 1998-2008, injected vs carb

I’m helping a friend look for a first runabout, around 1998-2008 model year. Looking for the 4.3. The Volvo model designations are pretty clear, G for GM, L - S or X for performance level, i for injected.

Please clarify the Mercruiser 4.3 designations. Mainly looking for what fuel injected options, port or TBI, were available in that period.

They had. 2 bbl carb, EFI which is throttle body injected, and MPI multi port injected offered over that time period. Best way for merc is by engine serial number

LX might have denoted the 4bbl carb vs 2 bbl. Older ones had Quadrajets & then they switched to the Weber/Carter/Edelbrock style 4bbl
