This is an 80's model I believe but a lot of the lower units are similar for years newer than this also. IT has the ball shifter on the front. Changed the water pump and having a hell of a time getting the LU back on. Have had this same problem in the past with similar Mercs. The problem revolves around the fluted shift shaft. I removed the LU with the shaft in neutral position but the LU seems like it is stuck in reverse and will not go into forward of neutral after putting much time and energy into putting the 2 front bolts on and the big bolt toward the back and the smaller one also near the back and taking them off again. Repeat. Pounding the LU on and etc. War is hell!

A 35 HP and 4 cylinder ?----Serial # is ?-----You should not be pounding on a lower unit.----They slide together.-----If you removed lower unit with control in neutral then the lower unit often jumps into forward.----That because the clutch dog is spring loaded.----So start over.----Remove lower unit.-----Put lower unit in neutral.----Control in neutral.----Slide it together !!

They can be a pain in the *** for sure!

Here's a trick I use (and I use a lot of these LUs): The top half of the brass cam wants to fall out if the motor is vertical, so I wrap the shifter rod coming down from above with electrician's tape to jam the cam in place. Next, using a pencil grinder, I taper the shifter shaft coming up from the LU to make it easier to go together. Finally, I use a hook to grab and maneuver the water tube coming down from above to position it correctly.

Since I work alone (and have a bad back) I use a bungee cord to take the weight of the dangling LU.
