Metal Shavings in Drive

"OK, I seem to get conflicting information from 2 different dealers. Who much if any is an aceptable amount of metal shavings in your lower unit? My manual just says to watch for them. One dealer says rebuild, the other says it fine. I need a real awnser, but Volvo no longer replys to questions, they say I must talk with a dealer."

Tear it down and look for the cause b4 it does even more damage. Was this routine maintenance or did you have a problem?

"I had purchased the boat and during the survey I found the shavings. I noted on the contract that the pronlem should be fixed by the dealer, they agreed then after my check cleared they said that the drive was fine. I diagree and took it to another dealer. They say rebuild. I just hate to spend $7,500 if I don't need to, but I also don't want to get stuck on the lake either. I have been doing montly changes just to monitor the amount of shavings. I sent in the oil to have it tested and they came back that the metals were to high. So I'm thinking about just having it done over the winter lay up."

Seems to me that you have all

Seems to me that you have all the required documentation and proof to hold the dealer's feet to the fire and have them pick up the tab. Don't let it go!

"There should be no metal or dirt in the drive. This not an Mercruiser Alpha! The couplings in Volvos does not generate any debris.
Must open up and rebuild, it will break otherwise."

"The problem I have getting th

"The problem I have getting the dealer to pay for it is /volvo has no written documents that say no metal ships should be present. The manual just says to "check drive for metal shavings", And Volvo won't respond except to say I must see a dealer."

"Ok, your dealer is obviously

"Ok, your dealer is obviously isanne, and cheap. The rhetoric question to the statement in the shop manual is: Do you check the drive for metal shavings because it is:
A: Ok, and you should worry if no shavings?
B: It is NOT ok and you should review the drive?
Talk to another dealer! Or send the dealer's obnoxious response to Volvo in Gothenburg, Sweden... My god...."

"I agree with Lars, I had a temp-gauge problem and had to send a very hasty email and copy of what the crazy dealer was telling me too VP, In fact the dealers was told by VP to do the repairs ASAP...It took me two weeks of crap and one email to solve the problem...Good luck"

"all meshing gears shed material as they wear or even break in. Even in cone clutch drives, a fine "fur" on a magnetic plug is nothing to be concerned about.
The problem is, some people clean the fur off every time they pull the plug, and others do not. You have to stick with one system or the other.
I prefer to keep the plug magnets clean. Any new fur will indicate higher than normal wear.

Shavings, on the other hand are bad news. Any pieces curled and peeled off, blue in color, or big enough to be called shavings indicate impending failure. the drive should be taken out of service and torn down."

"Hmm, well I don't agree,

"Hmm, well I don't agree, a correct gearset doesn't shed at all in a correctly made and lubed, gear box. If you find more material than miniscule amounts of black dirt on the magnet from the second oil change on, there is a problem or a design fault (not including automatics).
My DP-S have 100hr per oil change and no darker oil and no dirt at all around the bottom plug. My old Alpha one had metal stuff from the dog clutch but nothing else. My 5c"

"These gears are spiral bevel

"These gears are spiral bevel and slightly hypoid, which means they slide in contact. All gears have some surface roughness (called "asperity"). Continued sliding together of these surfaces sheds some material. It can't be avoided..there is no lubricant that eliminates ALL friction and it's the main reason outdrive oil needs to be changed. An outdrive's only filtration system is the magnetic plug.
Anti friction (tapered roller) bearings also shed metal. All parts are designed to have a finite life and they are designed to wear. Volvo Penta engineers spec, budget for, and select parts that will give adequate service life and fail at the predicted point in their life when properly maintained. It called "wear to failure"
$7500 to rebuild the drive? I'd certainly be getting a second opinion."

"I definetly have metal shavin

"I definetly have metal shaving, not just particals. I hired an attorney to sue the original dealer. I'm sure once they get the paper served, they will look at it with fresh eyes.
The $7500 to rebuild the drive is removal of the old and installing a rebuiltDP/C1 unit from Volvo. None of dealers in my area will actually rebuild a DP/C drive for some reason.
I am use to Merc's drives, this drive makes them look clean.
I ordered some oil sample kits from Oil Analyzers Inc., and will just send in samples from the next few oil changes."
