Good morning guys, I'm a old DIY mechanic and I need help figuring out my OE {operator error} after I replaced all the ignition system components on my Merc. All the components test right where the specs say they should be and it has great spark, When I try to set the WOT, the BTDC numbers appear about 1" to the right of the pointer and I'm not able to adjust them any closer to where they should be, about 23 deg BTDC. I checked the position of # 1 cylinder TDC and it's right on the pointer. What I don't know is does the trigger coil mounting position, if it's out of position say by 1 hole does that effect timing ? Over the many years I've found that it's usually something simple and I'm reaching that frustration point and really need someone with far more knowledge to set me straight about timing this outboard. Appreciate your time.... Ray

Well I found out that the trigger coil can only mount in one spot, so I got that right and the advance mechanism moves freely and to it's maximum travel and I cleaned all the old grease off and replaced it with the correct marine grease. I do realize that if I try to start the motor with this timing setting it would severely damage the motor. Am I the only one to ever experienced this timing setting ?
