Motorguide Brute 750 12/24v Trolling Motor Wiring

Hi, all. Sorry if this doesn't belong, but didn't really know where else to ask. I just picked up a good, used Motorguide Brute 750 that has a 3 wire plug that was replaced with an aftermarket plug on the motor and boat side, wire colors are Black, Red & Orange. I know the motor works, the PO sent me a video of it running on both 12 and 24v mode, but I didn't think to ask how he wired it. I'm trying to determine how to wire this to a dual battery setup. I have not done much with wiring this in depth (relative to my skillset) and am not sure how I should do it.

My brain tells me that black is definitely ground, while red and orange are positives. I figure red goes to one battery's + and the orange to the other's + terminal. Would this be correct? Also, I do know I need a fuse or circuit breaker in line on the positives, looks like 40 amp should be right? Thanks for any info!

Not quite...

Take a battery, call it #1. Attach your circuit breaker to the negative post and connect ground cable, going to the motor to the other terminal of the circuit breaker.

Make up a short jumper and connect one end of the jumper and your red wire to the positive post of battery #1.

Get the other battery- #2. Connect the short jumper to the negative post of #2. Now connect the orange wire to the positive post of #2.

This will give you 12 volts between the red and black and 24 volts between orange and black.

I suggest marine grade wire and good crimp terminals sealed with double wall heat shrink tubing...read the trolling motor manual to determine the properly sized circuit breaker and wire gauge...
