The motor in my glastron went this summer and the cost of a rebuild or reman is way over the cost of the boat. I've been looking for replacements but there's very few 165s in good shape near me - most are parts units with cracked blocks. Any GM250s are so far away that shipping or even a uhaul road trip would outweigh any savings. I've been considering throwing a 3.0 in and putting a lower pitch prop on, though I would need to build and glass a new mount.

Any other options? I don't care much about power, mostly just cruise around. Currently have an 898 outdrive on which I believe has lower gearing than the original unit. Does anyone in yhe Nipissing area have a 165 they don't want or know someone who does?

will also require reglassing - a 4.3 is what replaced the 250 I6 back in the early 80's when merc stopped using it. your chances of finding a decent used 4.3 or rotten boat with one that can be pulled are much better. Issue will be you will need a wider engine compartment than a inline. if there space wise I would look at this route , especially if you can find a rotten glass boat with the complete driveline. If you get the whole driveline with all the bits an pieces you could upgrade the OD as well to a alpha gen 1 or 2 . Really depends on how much you like the boat and if you want to keep it.

otherwise a 3.0 and drop pitch and gear ratio is the other option.
