Need some advice on my 1989 48 SPL E48ESLCER

I just finished building a 12' "Bullet" from Glen-L. I have this motor on it and it's running and pumping really well. But it pops out of forward gear when I try to take off. I've adjusted the linkage and shift rod and it has gotten mildly better, but still happening at half throttle. It pops a couple of times and I just head right back to the dock. I've had three one minute outings so far. I found the shift rod measurement was off by 3/16" or so. I'm wondering if it was run in this "off" position sufficiently to damage the clutch dog. I've heard that these gear sets are not very "robust", so maybe they're damaged as well. Since the engine runs really well, I'd like to open up the gear case and see what's good and what's bad. Does it require special tools just to get the prop shaft all the way out to check the clutch dog and forward gear? Or should I look for another 89-92 lower unit which maybe a crap shoot? I'd really like this motor to work on this boat because I believe it's just the right power/weight to perform the way I want it to. Thanks.

Fortunately, I was able to find a 1990 48 SPL that's in good running shape and the lower unit functions as it should. So now that makes the 1989 a parts engine.

However it is a lot of weight for the back of my little boat and it porpoises pretty good. I thought my enormous girth (think retired defensive tackle) would combat that. But I can move the gas tank and battery way up front and slap on a whale tail and probably trim tabs and be good to go. As soon as it gets on plane, it just launches like a rocket.
