New Suzuki break-in procedure

Reaching out for some guidance. I have always had used outboards and I am now repowering with a new 115 Suzuki.
A lot of what I have been reading, the break in procedure seems pretty in depth (Almost 2 hours at 3000 RPMs and another hour at 4000 RPMs). I use the boat mainly on the lake, which would equate to me just doing circles for several hours. With that said, can anyone advise if that much time is actually necessary and does it have to be done all at once or can that run time be broken up over time?

Follow your owners manual keeping track of run time hours and rpms. Unless Suzuki has changed their tachometer/monitor system the tachometer won’t show engine hours until you reach 50 hours. Once you reach 20 hours the oil change reminder will start beeping, at that time take the engine back to the dealer for it’s first oil change as per warranty coverage. Don’t cheat, the dealer will be able to read the hours and rpm range during your break in period. You can break in the engine over multiple trips. A quick phone call to your dealer can’t hurt to verify what I have told you. Your first oil change is not free, check your owners manual what’s involved in your 20 hours oil change but I’d GUESS it’s about $500, again your dealer should be able to give you an idea of the cost and lead time they need to book you in.

DO NOT DEVIATE FROM THE SUZUKI PROCEDURE!

You WILL BE SORRY if you do...

We've seen several new Suzi's, Honda's or others on our river burn oil after their "all too eager owners" took them out and ran around the sound at 3/4 throttle or WOT without doing the break-in procedure correctly. The procedure allows the piston rings to wear in properly at different operating temps.

No, it's not fun -- and Yes, it takes time and a concerted effort -- but it should be a once-in-25-years activity.

And -- DON'T FORGET about the guidance for hours 5 to 10 -- as that's important too (read the manual).

If you cheat -- you're only cheating yourself.........

ps: My twin and I just went through this with our new DF140B outboards -- not fun, but the right thing to do.

Is the 20 hour oil change only a dealer maintenance option? Can it be a diy maintenance with proper records?
