no start 1982 merc 70hp magneto cd ignition

have spark new fuel ck out stator and trigger mbelieve they are within ranges.when i start to turn it over the starter stops and pinion gear stats ingauged until i back flywheel just a little has been turning over good before.boat sat for 10 yrs.said it ran when parked.acts like timing is way off.i dont think its the starter. have manuel but dont quite know how to interpet sync part of timing.any help would be appreciated .Im new to forum so i hope im going about this right.thank you all

Timing on these motors does not change over 10 years of sitting.------Take the starter apart for cleaning and inspection first.

Most stator drive outboards need to be turning at about 300 rpm to generate enough power to start and fire the plugs. It sound like you need to check ALL the starter related electrical connections from your "FRESH" Battery through the solenoid to the starter. Ten years can create a lot of contact oxidation.

I'm changing out starter with brand new one today.ck my connections space and they all seem to be all right .ill finish that then ck for spark again.had a spark on all three cyl. but looked to be weak

installed new starter which had been bought for merc 75 hp,so i had to change out pinion gear new one had 8 cogs my old starter 12.anyway it turned over twice as quick and fited right up.water pump seem to be doing its job,ran smooth just need to turn idle dn a little. ill have to get a tach i guess.that you all for the help,i appreciate it very much .
