"92 4.3 alpha 1 gen 2 pulled lower out drive and pulled out water impeller seems to be fine.I took the hose off the thermastat witch leads to the outdrive and started it no water coming through, witch cools the motor. I also poored water through the hose up by the thremastat and it ran out the outdrive with the lower unit off."

The impeller is nice and soft

The impeller is nice and soft and o-rings in good shape. Why doesnt it push water up to motor? Also put new water hose in outdrive.I have a clear passage all the way through the hoses.

"Try pushing water thru to the

"Try pushing water thru to the stat housing with the lower gear case off, just to be sure.

If that checks out and it won't pump, there are several possibilities, none of which are good:
-no key in the pump impeller locking it to the vertical drive shaft.
-gears in the upper gearcase shot; vertical shaft not turning
-drive coupler in the flywheel shot; driveshaft not turning

What other observations have you made?
Give us any more information that you have.

"I installed new lower shift c

"I installed new lower shift cable and was ajusting it with the motor running putting it in forward and reverse just for a few seconds pump was working fine then just quit, key was in impeller and is tight on shaft."

If I were to start it it woul

If I were to start it it would go into forward and reverse that means vertical shaft and gears are working right?Yes the prop does turn

I did run water through the st

I did run water through the stat housing and runs freely through the outdrive.Ill try to run water from lower up to thermastat housing.

"you dont split the cases for

"you dont split the cases for a shift cable ,you remove the drive. It`s difficult to blow air back from the T housing if everyting is normal. Could the muffs have not been giving enough water or fallen off and burned the impeller? When you installed the drive did you install the O ring in the housing for the water feed? If you split the housing did you install the coppper tube?"

"I pulled the whole drive to r

"I pulled the whole drive to replace cable, bellows and water hose, muffs always on and new o-ring was put in.Once everthing was done I was running it to get the shift cable fine tuned everthing was fine water was exiting the outdrive just as it should then it just stopped and the motor started getting hot. yes the copper tube is in place.I will order a new impeller but the one thats in there looks fine. its in counter clock wise and all blades look even,I have to bend them to get it back in housing so I know it has a good seal.with the lower unit off I put muffs on and ran water and spun prop I could see impeller turning with water in it."

"Tim;
Which way are the impel

"Tim;
Which way are the impeller blades curled?

The shaft turns CW from the top, and the blades should curl CCW, again from the top.
So if you installed the impeller into the pump housing first, upside down on the bench, the blades should be curling back CW as you see them.

Here is a pic of what it should look like.

Impeller is ok. Check to make

Impeller is ok. Check to make absolutely sure that key is in place.

I would look at the transom water passage. It uses a plastic nylon white pipe on the outside and a black elbow on the inside held by two short bolts. It could be blocked.

From there it goes thru the steering cooler and to possibly the fuel cooler(EFI) and then either to the heat exchanger(closed cooling) or the front niple on the left side of the thermostat housing. You could start the engine and remove that hose and see if water is pumping out of that hose. Make sure you do it with fresh water.Duh!

You could also backflush that

You could also backflush that hose before you put the drive on and see if water flows freely out the water jacket pipe.

I did a backflush water runs r

I did a backflush water runs right through the water jacket pipe. And with the motor running had left side hose off stat housing no water coming out.I just am stumped.

"That says that the pump is no

"That says that the pump is not pumping or there could be a seal or plate missing.

Was the pump working before you did the maintenance and then after the work was done, it would not pump?

Make sure that the hose from bell hsg to transom is not kinked.

Check that water pump for all seals and tubes lining up...

.."

Water pump was working fine af

Water pump was working fine after all work was done. This morning I was ajusting shift cable with motor runnig water pump was working and then just quit. No kink in hose.

ok its fixed-----The muffs wer

ok its fixed-----The muffs were not sealed up against out drive enough. Lot of work to figure that one out.Ran water through lower outdrive with it off and not much water was coming through so I duck taped the muffs on and wow what a differance.Thank You all for your help Works great now.
