goes in gear out of the water but under load no forward gear..... happened all of a sudden while out on the lake for half a day, worked fine most of the day

Prolly your lower gear shift cable. Plenty of info on this forum, a quick search will get you your answer.

Drop the drive and check the shift mechanism. The bell crank could be gummed up, or the linkage gummed up. Check the linkage on the shifter and the connectors on the motor.

thanks guys, did a search but not much omc stuff came up, will post what we find out
In the upper right hand corner of this page you will see a link that says "Search Forums". Click it. In the keyword box type the words "cobra shift". You will definitely find quite a lot of information.

Unless you have knowledge on setting up this drive, and the necessary tools, which I disposed of because I swore a few years ago that I would no longer service them, it's better for you to have an experienced guy show you or do the job for you. Sorry.

You may be able to get it to work again but for how long, if it is not set up right.

Your other option is to pick up a Merc Alpha Gen two drive and a bell housing kit and convert your boat. If this conversion is done, your boat will be marketable again.

Chris.Don't scare these people,These drives if they're still working will probably be around a while longer. The basics are easy and anybody can clean the bellcrank and lube it. Sayng that, anyone who owns ANY mechanical device should have the FACTORY manual and the tools to do the job. Most men don't read instructions, thats why they end up repairing the upper drive.

I have a OMC King Cobra and reverse works perfect but in drive it will go into gear but won't accelerate any tips?
Tyler, this is an old thread from 2013. You need to start a new thread, you will get better results. You are in the correct forum (OMC) you just need to make a new thread. It will also help if you can include your model number and as much detailed information as possible. In general if you provide more information you will get better results.
