Hi ive got a 1971 50hp evinrude model no 50173s with push button remote control gears the problem i have is that its stuck in forward gear and i cant select neutral or reverse when out on the water i have no idea what the problem is can anybody help me please also is it possible to service the engine myself as ther
e doesnt seem to be many serviceble parts that i could physically see apart from the ovious.

wiring to the lower unit. wiring from the remote. low voltage at the battery won't supply enough to shift out of "get yourself back to landing mode". Electric shift models prone to wiring and or shifter solenoid failure. Could even be that you installed a remote shift unit that is not compatible with your motor.

It was bought as a set up engine and controls how do i check the symptoms that youve put in response to my problem its a pain in the butt when it starts in gear its taking alot outta the battery to start after several attempts

i would not use it,...till fixed.....u need batt voltage,on green wire for neutral, and voltage(12v) on both wires for rev...do u have plenty of lower unit oil and type?...it requires a thinner fluid, than newer ones,..however,..on a good wking unit,i have used reg ol lower unit oil.,and worked perfectly.

i have none at mo im a newbie to this so limited knowledge im afraid type c is that what i need i will invest in some tomorrow do i basically do an oil change like you do in a car and how much oil will i need to do the change ?

Have you had this unit working correctly? If not suspect the seller for false info. Not the first and not the last time. Get a service manual. Find a wiring diagram. Trace the wires coming up from the lower unit under the hood and check for broken wires. Unit may have been serviced and wires were pinched when put back together. Could also be shorted wire between the motor and the shifter. Or the shift clutch in the lower unit is bad. Electric shift not my forte but working on a 69 Johnson as a learner. What I see and learn is what I pass along.

(Hydro Electric Shift System Explained)
(J. Reeves)
The shifting setup of the lower unit is what's called a "Hydro Electric Shift", which is quite complex consisting of voltage being applied to solenoids in the lower unit which in turn change oil passages via a oil pump that supplies various pressure on a spring loaded shifter dog. The wires leading to the lower unit (at the powerhead) are "Green" and "Blue". The engine must be running or cranking over in order to shift out of forward gear.

You CAN NOT use HI VIS lube in that lower unit. You MUST USE what OMC calls "Premium Blend" lube, commonly called "Type C". (A thinner lube)

Note: The engine must be running OR have the driveshaft turning by some other means in order for the engine to shift.

In neutral, you need 12v to the "Green" wire.
In reverse, you need 12v to both wires, the "Green" one and the "Blue" one.
In forward, there should be no voltage to either wire. (The spring loaded shifter dog forces the unit into forward gear)

To check the lower unit for proper shifting to make sure you have no trouble there, remove the spark plugs to avoid problems and to allow a higher cranking speed.

This next step eliminates the actual shift switch in case problems may exist there.... Disconnect the blue & green wires at the knife connectors (the rubber insulated boots) leading to the lower unit at the powerhead, then using jumpers, take voltage direct from the starter solenoid to apply voltage to the "Green" wire for neutral, then both wires 'Green" & "Blue" for reverse (Remember the engine must be cranking over in order to shift).
With no voltage applied, the unit should be in forward. No need for a ground jumper... the lower unit's already grounded. You may crank the engine with the key switch or by energizing the starter solenoid with a jumper wire.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay store at:
