This is a simple one, and probably a lot of opinion involved here and for that reason I will take anything, even if it's just your two cents.
I am currently rebuilding my Cobra outdrive and I came across some information from a fella who paints the inside of some areas of his lower units when he rebuilds them. He uses an aluminum appropriate primer and a clear coat on top of that. Nothing crazy, just a simple layer to help with corrosion in water contact areas. Have any of you ever done this or seen it done? I'm just wondering if it is worthwhile or a waste of time and money. Part of me says that if it was truly worthwhile they would have done it at OMC, the other part of me says that manufacturers rarely concern themselves with issues that won't be of concern until well after the warranty period.
Not sure that it matters, but the boat was previously on freshwater and had little to no corrosion inside the lower unit, and will be used primarily in saltwater moving forward. I hear that the outdrives used on saltwater seem to have more issues with the corrosion?
I'm not looking forward to adding more work to the project so I'd like to skip anything that isn't truly necessary, that said I don't want to shortchange myself while I have access to the inside of the outdrive. I also don't want to do something stupid and paint something that should never have been painted. Not sure it matters but one of the areas I would most likely paint is the area where the propeller shaft and lower bearing carrier are housed as I hear those bearing carriers are prone to getting stuck in the lower gear housing.
What say you Gents!? Paint or no paint?
