Penta GX-i Compression results? Help?

Hi, I put in a great offer on a 2006 Cruiser with Twin Volvo Penta 5.0V8 GX i engines. I had a proper compression test done and attached are the results. I was kind of shocked surprised with 466 hours at the results. I know is well possible but don't see this much from a 2006 engines at all.

I know that the rule is 10% - 15% across the board of each cylinder within. I researched that this Penta GX i normal compression range is between 125 and 175 PSI. Calculating the average of all 8 cylinders I came up with 170psi on all 8. The test was done a few times for accuracy and this was actually the medium of high and low. The results were always +/- 1-3 psi variable.

The Engines both have 466 hours on them backed up by the ECM hook up readings and hours digital gauges. The info I have on the 1 owner from new previously is that they changed the oil & filter every 40 hours. It's a Freshwater only boat also, and is in very good condition for the age. I was a bit concerned about the 4 lowest cylinders on Port - # 6, 4 & 3, and Starboard - # 6. A long time Tech told me those were well taken care of engine numbers, and he would take those any day.

I really like the Penta GX-i that's its a V8 5.0. Not a V6 and not a 5.7 Gas wise altho I don't think there would be that big a difference in the 5.0 and 5.7 but less gas is less gas, not more. I was actually thinking about have the Heads pulled during this winter and have a guy I know well that does race engines re-do the Heads, Mild stage 1 porting and a nice Valve job. He said he see's anywhere from 30hp - 45hp increase and better fuel usage efficiency. I have had car heads done before on a Flow bench ported and matched and I think he's right. Sorry such a long post. So what are you guys thought? Please share, especially Engine Techs. Thanks.

The engines are in decent shape...based on the compression data...

I wouldn't take it apart until it needs it...when it comes time for the valve job, I would worry about the valve job ( 3 angles are plenty) and wouldn't worry much about porting ...get rid of the flashing and leave it alone...what works in a race car usually doesn't work in a boat engine...

On the 5.0 vs the 5.7s, the 5.0s will spin faster than the 5.7s, in a given boat, for a given speed...so don't expect any economy advantage..
 
Thanks. As far as the porting, and casting clean up, a improved slight flow will help on most any engine, if done correctly.

Most of the research, and fuel usage charts I have ever seen, showed the 5.0 to get about 2 - 3 Gal's per hour better than the 5.7 like for like. Keep in mind with Twin's that's going to be times x 2 engines also.
 
Just remember the boat engine's will never see the operating RPM of a race engine....you want the boat engine to make max torque at your cruise RPM, for best economy....and most people that race cars really don't appreciate the differences...
 
Yes I agree. Maybe we have some misunderstanding about porting types? A mild casting clean up and Matched Flow Bench measured, port flow CFM improvement will help low rpm, mid and high. A good port job casting and mild clean up for this application should actually improve the mid range with not just hp but even more so in Torque increase even at a 3k rpm. I was not talking about a Race job port for cams or rpm redline. Again just a mild clean up of casting. That Vortec V8 GM motor has been around for a long time. A good head port shop guy knows what to do for the application. Thats the reason there are stage 1,2,3 port jobs kinda.

My wish would be to have the Intake mani, TB matched, Heads, and valves done. Not a full race stage 3 port. The guy I have does work on a flow bench, and provided the CFM before and after. Just a FYI - The Vortec GM Edelbrock heads swap will provide around 28 + horsepower and 32+ lb-ft of Torque. To stock motor with no other changes. The supporting data for this has been around for many, many years. The benefits of better airflow and combustion efficiency, on a stock motor all equal better fuel economy efficiency, more hp and Torque through out the entire rev range.
Sorry if there was misunderstanding thinking I was going after a full race engine job. I am not. Back on track to the Compression test and numbers. Thanks.
 
No problems here...just trying to help one manage their expectations...like your Edelbrock head numbers...no doubt they can improve things - the question is at what RPM? if its up over 4000RPM the chances are very good a boat engine will rarely see the improvement...

On your compression numbers, for reference, GM redefined what was acceptable for a compression test and they did it back in the late 1990's. cold engine; no cylinder below 100 PSI and no cylinder below 70% of the max cylinder observed...much less stringent than the traditional 10% limits...
 
Thanks. Again a experienced Port guy with flow bench can measure lift cfm air from the lowest to highest rpm. I do understand what you are saying about gains being the most in the higher to reline rpm.
 
Porting for performance gains is not for everyone. Measure on a flow bench with some experienced knowledge will either make or break.

Ayuh,..... I agree,..... It'll take 50 to 100hp increase to "Feel" any improvement,....
 
Off the original thread but my question about the compression was answered and confirmed by thanks to makomark.

Some may want to research David Vizards experience and reputation on engine mods and Heads. In regards to the last 2 post. A Merc 350 5.7 Mag is not to to run the same boat as fast as a 383 Mag, due to hp and Tq. It's just a fact. So it does count. What is missing here is it Not hp or just about hp if not a top speed or reline pull. It's about Torque. The Torque is what you feel, and you will feel it unless you don't really know your boat. lol!

That's why a 3/4 Ton Diesel Truck will not make as much hp as it does make tons more of Torque. The flow port, intake match, and improvements will make more Torque. Also if you know your boat will will feel the improved fuel economy benefits. I do understand the engine efficiency improvement Mods are not for everyone.
