Priming a fuel system w/ water fuel seperator.

Anybody do this? I burnt my battery and heated a negative cable pretty bad by using the starter motor to get fuel to the carb. I figure there has to be a better way. Starters on my boat aren't cheap if you can even find one (MCM470). I don't want to burn it out. I put a new water/fuel filter on and had to fill the whole system up again. Someone told me to get a hand siphon pump and pull fuel to the fuel pump on the engine. Anybody do this?

Ayuh,... If the fuel pump won't do it by itself in a reasonable time, I'd think you've got Other problems...

Like the corroded battery terminal that caused the burnt up battery...
is the pump weak,..??
Is the tank givenin' up it's fuel,..??

I just changed mine two days ago. I filled it up with gas before I installed it and had no problems at all...........after restart of the motor it did not skip a beat!

One of the easiest solutions to this is to warm up your engine just a bit, prior to changing this fuel filter cartridge.
You not only have supplied fuel to the carburetor, but a warm engine will usually pop off fairly quickly.... sparing excessive cranking time.

A carburetor's worth of fuel will normally allow for enough run time to prime a fuel filter cartridge..... even when installed "dry".

Exactly what I did..............!!

OK Thanks for the advice. Filling the filter seems like the best thing to do. I usually change my filter when I winterize but this year I waited until I dewinterized. They are big filters and with a mechanical pump in good condition it still takes too long to fill.

Fuel line from tank to filter about 4' and then another three to the fuel pump. No anti siphon valves, had nothing but trouble, took em all out. Tune up is fresh. Battery was only three years old now it's brand new. The old one must've sacrificed itself to get fuel to the carb because as soon as I put the new one in I had fuel to the carb and she started right up.

Bt Doctor elaborate on the vent port? I have a 2bbl Mercarb. Do you have a schematic on where it is?

I pretty much make sure everything is completely empty of fuel except the tank when winterizing. I think priming the carb and filling the filter before trying to start is a wise thing.
