Hi, As I understand it 1968 and 1969 Mercury 650 motors are pretty much the same. I also under stood 1970 and 1971 are the same . Apparently the only difference between the years is that in 1970, 71 they used a 2.3 to 1 gear ratio v 2.1 to 1 in 68,69? Is this correct.? Is there any reason to use on year over the other if all other things are equal condition wise? More dig but slightly less top end? Thanks ,Keith

The boast is a 1964 Crestliner Crest Rider., VERY light. Was my grandfathers and then my dads. Have had for 25 years. Originally had a 1966 50HP Mercury but sold it for a 1968 650. Have had that for 15 years then grabbed a 1969 650. Point being the boat has not been in the water for 6 years and I am repainting /restoring it again/ Last time was 1995. The engines have been sitting and I know the 1969 one needs a water pump. I am not in the mood to tear in to these at age 64 as the redoing the boat is a big enough pain and have other projects but there is a nice running 1970 650 near me which i could buy and use for now and deal with the others when I feel like it. Hence my question.

FYI this boat with motor, 2 full fuel tanks, battery and gear is only $975. With the 68 650 it would run 35 MPH with a 15 pitch prop. The book says 17 pitch based on the weight but it does not accelerate as fast with the 17 and for some reason is slower on the top end. then the 15 pitch. these are all original Mercury props. The 68 had a stainless on it when I got it and it did not like that at all.

As I understand it these motors are the smallest in the family that has to turn a big lower unit? Thanks
