e50belcde 1986 50 hp......... So I was gonna flush the motor and I put it in a tub of water and started it up. Let it run at an idle and went back to see if it was getting hot. It was I could only hold my hand on it for a count of 4 before it started burning. I noticed a small amount of water running down by the plugs, and noticed it was coming out from around the head cover at the top. . I was wondering if I take it apart to replace the thermostat can I go back with rtv silicone gasket maker. My local shop here doesnt stock alot of parts for this motor.

Also is the cover all I need to take off to replace the themostat? or do I need to take the head completely off. Thanks.

What kind of "tub of water" did you have it in? That may be the only problem. It was designed to run on a boat on the lake, not in a tub. Large test tanks made for the purpose excepted. However, the leaking gaskets indicate a current or prior overheating damage.

Permatex is what I was referring to, the name slipped my mind. I found that there was a bolt missing in the cover and that is where the leak was. I have changed the thermostat and will put it back together with permatex tomorrow if my local shop doesnt have the gasket. I also got a replacement bolt for the missing one. heres Hoping!!!!!

As far as the "tub" goes I have it setting down in a Large( probaby 50 gallon) plastic rubbermaid trash can. filled up over the cavitation plate. kept water hose running so it wouldnt pump all the water out.
