Simple Diagnosis Report Question

Hi:
I have a boat with twin 2020 Honda BF250D motors and had a service technician do a quick OBDC check which produced a single page report. I was hoping for a more comprehensive report but...

Both engines show about 174 hours.

I have just a couple questions:

1. Under "Other Information", One engine shows "Total number of TDC: 2". The other shows "Total number of TDC: 3"
What does this mean?
Is it significant?

2. Under "Other Information", both engines show: "Latest all history: NMEA3000 Can Communication Malfunction Between The Engine and Remote Control - 101-1"
What does this mean?
Is it significant?

3: Under "SW Information" "Rocker Arm Contol Solenoid Count: 799 Times"
What does this mean?
Is it significant?

4. Is there a possibility of a serious problem that this report did not show and the more comprehensive report would have?

Thanks for your help

Sorry... that is supposed to be "Total Number of DTC"

Hi,

I don't work on these nor do I have any service info on them....so this is just me sounding off because thats what I get paid $0.00 to do here. :)

If this is a recent purchase, I suspect that the "other information" DTC's may just be historical info stored in memory and might be nothing to concern you. Those could be issues that have already been dealt with but weren't completely deleted for whatever reason.

I don't know what "SW information" is either but I would want to if these were mine because, what if SW stood for "severe wear"?

It could also simply mean "service wear" or "solenoid wear" possibly tracking the "life cycle" built into those components.
I don't know.

But the real reason I piped up is because, a few years back, I worked as a contract mechanic for an "authorized Honda Marine dealer". I put that in quotes for a very pertinent reason.

I learned then that, to remain "authorized" meant essentially buying a requisite amount of "supplies" and tools but nothing else apparently.

It had NOTHING to do with having a service department or selling parts to the public.

I'm telling you this to emphasize that, just because a joint has a Honda shingle hanging up outside, it doesn't mean that there are knowledgeable and competent persons inside manning the ship available to diagnose and repair your stuff.

While I do know there are some great Honda Marine dealerships
and Honda DOES provide periodic "in service" training and classes to help keep shops current, I don't think all shops participate. Mine didn't.

Also, if you had your outboards scanned by an "independent" shop or technician, then it's very likely that they weren't using the very expensive scanner that Honda sells to it's dealers.
That could be important because, when the dealer buys the scanner, they also get the accompanying documents that explain all the "shorthand" and terms.

Having used both the Dr.H software available to the public as well as what comes with the dealer tool, it was my experience that the dealer tool and software was more comprehensive. With features like bi-directional controls that weren't available on the "consumer" software.

But....it's been awhile and....things may have changed.

So, this is all a long and winding way of saying...
...Choose carefully the shop that you ALLOW to touch those very pricey Hondas.

Good luck.

Hi Guys,

I use the consumer version of Dr H for my 2016 BF250A.

Each season I print out the "Service Report" so I have a record of hours used from year to year.

The DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) listed in Other information is the count of trouble codes logged, Not necessarily being a current issue.

As an example, My engine was running rough so I used DR H to get the error code and also printed the report.
Total number of DTC: 1
Latest All History: HO2 S FAILURE

I replaced the bad HO2 sensor.
Used DR H. to clear codes. Then did another report:
Total number of DTC: 0
Latest All History:

I assumed the Rocker Arm Control Solenoid shows the total number of times the VTEC was engaged? However, I may be wrong.
The number on my service reports continues to increase.

Dr H gives much more detail, I just don't print it out.

In summary, I believe what jgmo already stated, your DTC's may just be historical info. Your report was printed before the codes were cleared or the codes were not cleared after the issue was dealt with.

I have gained a ton of valuable info reading these posts over the years. Especially from jgmo and chawk_man. Much appreciated!!

Below is an old writeup from chawk_man for Pulling and Clearing codes without Dr H.

Pull fault codes

You could:
1 - clear any codes
2 - run your engines
3 - then see if codes return.

If your engines are running well, then I would think you are fine. I generally only pull codes to help diagnose a poorly running engine.

Good Luck
