Small lead shot ball in the carburetor?

1978 35HP 35853R
While ordering a carb rebuild kit I noticed in the parts diagram there is a small led shot item #2 in the low speed port in front of the needle. My carb did not have this in there and the rebuild kit does not have it either. What exactly is the purpose of this lead shot? Thanks!

Remember to make sure main jet is ultra clean. If the piston are .020 oversize, it will require a tad more fuel. A lean running outboard is a short life outboard. I add one jet size on my overhauls. I have an extensive machinists drill bit set that my dad bought me 40 years ago. I do jet resizing quite often. Fixed jets can toast motors if your not careful. Multi carbs make matters worse, where one carb is lean, but the other is okay. What happens? The strong cylinder drags the "drier" cylinder around faster than it would be running if just a single carb, for instance, was running lean.......like on a 30 or 35 horse. In other words in your case, with a single carb, you will notice right away, the lean acting motor. The plugs will be showing light brown or even whiter. In the aforementioned dual carb scenario, the dry cylinder scores and you are cooked. Ethanol will leave invisible deposits in fixed jets and it may appear that they are open, but in reality, the orfice is downsized......thereby causing the problem.
