Stator Compatibility

I just bought a boat that came with a (I think, has clamshell) late 80s Mariner 70HP 3 cyl. It has a cracked powerhead, so it's basically just for parts. It also came with a 1978 80HP 4cyl that has good compression. I noticed that the 2 yellow wires coming off of the stator on the 80 are pretty much disintegrated. So I'm wondering if these stators are compatible. By the parts lookup here, the 70 has stator # 398-5704A 7. While the 80 has # 398-5919A 3. I have seen aftermarket stators that show they are compatible with both. Does they have the same # of wires? If not, where does the extra go? Field perhaps? IDK Thanks.

Are you talking about the stator output wires to a rectifier/regulator?

If so, a two wire stator has a single phase output. A three wire stator has a three phase output. The R/R will be wired accordingly.

If the motor has a two wire R/R and the stator has a three wire output then two of the three wires can be used. But it won't output the same electrical power. But perhaps the three wire R/R could be transferred to the motor when the stator is transferred.

From a mechanical perspective you need to see if the one stator will fit on the motor without being obstructed by any other components. See if the flywheel part numbers are one and the same for instance.

The flywheel part #s for the 70 are 248-5977A25 and 248-8722A5. While for the 80 they are 248-5977A24, 248-5977A9, and 248-8722A6. So they're super close, but not exact. The one that is on my 70 appears to be recent aftermarket. It has 2 yellow, 1 blue, 1 black, and 1 red.

As for field, I saw a thread on Justanswer where someone said using a "newer" stator on the "older" motor leaves one extra wire that needs to go to "field". But like I said, I don't know. The years of the motors in that thread were almost the same as what I'm dealing with.

Well, this stator definitely won't work on my motor since it's a wire short. But, it seems I don't need one at the moment. I pulled my #2 trigger wire(where I had spark) and moved it to #3 and #4 and the spark moved with it. So I'm guessing the trigger is the culprit.

Does the timing have to be reset after replacing just the trigger? I know that the stator has to come off before the trigger, but presumably goes back on in the same position.
