Stuck Choke? Honda 30

Hey guys, I've been having some issues with my Honda Bf30A. After coming back from a fishing trip not too long ago, the motor was idling really high. Not sure if this was related, but that same day I found out that my lower unit oil seals were compromised, and that the oil mixed with water. I recently replaced the oil seals, changed the oil, and replaced the impeller. After starting the motor again, the idle was back to normal, but it was running rough. I had to adjust the fuel/air mixture screws on the carburetors to get it idling normally again. I also noticed that pulling the choke wasn't doing anything. The connections are working fine, but nothing happens when I pull the choke. I'm not too sure what correlates to what, so I was hoping you guys could help clear some things up. Do you think my choke is stuck? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Your lower end problem has nothing to do with the idle problem.

How many hours a year year do you run this thing? Do you have fresh fuel? It could just be gummed up from lack of use.

I have a BF30A motor with carburetors They really don't have a choke as in old motors from the 60's, the have an fuel enrichment circuit. Best advice, if the carbs are acting up, remove them, do a very extensive micro cleaning of all passages and orifices. Make sure your float levels are set correctly and install new rebuild kits. Also the brass tube in the center of the carb will develop small hairline cracks that prevents the motor from idling properly. I went through mine when I got it and it has run fine since. Learned how to rebuild them when I owned a 1982 Yamaha 650Maxim with 4 carbs.

Thanks for the info guys. NSDON, I only recently bought the motor, and it has been run at least once a week since I bought it. I always use fresh ethanol free fuel, and it couldn't be gummed up from lack of use. Bruce, I have been hoping i wouldn't have to do an extensive cleaning of the carbs, but you're probably the 5th person to tell me to do so, so I guess I'll just have to put in some time and do it. Thanks for the instructions, I will do a cleaning as soon as possible; we will see how it goes.

Like I said..I had an old 1982 Yamaha 650 Maxim with 4 carbs that only ran like designed if the carbs were perfectly cleaned, in sync and with perfectly set float levels. Here is the link to "The Church of Clean" that taught me how to do all that. It was surprising that the knowledge gained on the Hitachi carbs carried me right through the carbs on the Honda BF30A. Hope this helps.

If you recently purchased it, it is in my opinion a best practice to pull and clean the carbs. A rough idle typically indicates your float needle is stuck, you have a blocked jet etc. You didn't mention the year and potential hours of use on the motor. If it was heavily used or older, it is also due for the Valve Clearance to be checked. Here is a video of how to do it. https://youtu.be/aVBWNAhs3XU

Lastly, your high idle issue could be from a few things, is best to pull the carbs, inspect, replace parts if need be clean and then sync the carbs. Here is a video of how to: https://youtu.be/bsHCMJnRY9A

Without telling us more, like year etc or other things its hard to diagnose this one without opening up the carbs.

I have a Honda bf30D and it thus not start unless I drop one drop of petrol in the air intake, then it start and work fine.idling and full throttle. Can you help please?

If he has a choke knob, his motor has individual chokes on each carb.

The D models are fuel injected, no?
